What is Swanson Cat's Claw?

Swanson Cat's Claw is actually a name used to describe Uncaria tomentosa, a woody climbing vine with fiercely savage claw shaped thorns. Found growing exclusively in the tropical jungles of South and Central America, this plant also known as una de gato by the locals is one of history's best kept secrets.
The Ashaninka tribe people who have outlived the Incas are one of several locales who have used the Cat's Claw bark as a healer for many centuries. Given though that Peru is believed to have more uncontacted tribes than any other South American country, it is hard to say just how many indigenous populations rely on the mythical plant for its healing qualities.
What is known is that in 1974 when Klaus Keplinger an Austrian scientist and explorer, first discovered the Ashaninka people using the plant to make herbal teas, he was so impressed by the effects that he urgently returned home with samples.
